South Sudan Bar Association
The South Sudan Bar Association is an independent professional body established in 2011 after South Sudan’s independence. Its mission is to uphold the rule of law and promote high legal standards by ensuring representation of individuals in legal matters nationwide.
Membership has grown from a small initial base to over 500 licensed attorneys as of 2024, divided between senior and junior rolls. However, some lawyers have left practice for government roles or after disciplinary action.
The association is governed by the 2014 Legal Profession Act and its own 2016 bylaws. Key bodies include the General Assembly, Bar Council, Secretariat, and specialized committees.
Under its leadership, the Bar Association has become an important institution building an independent judiciary and respect for rule of law in the young nation.
