Public Interest Advocacy
EALS promotes the common good of the people of the East Africa region through targeted interventions on issues of public interest, particularly the rule of law, good governance, democracy, constitutionalism, respect for human and people’s rights and peace building. Under this theme EALS:
Undertakes key public interest litigation projects at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) and the African Court on Human and people’s Rights (AfCHPR). The major focus has been violations of the rule of law and partner states but EALS’s public interest litigation committee is looking to expand this to include trade, health, environment and other pressing issues affecting the people of East Africa.
Production of an”Annual Report on the State of the Rule of Law”in the EAC. Set to commence this year, this project will develop a score card on the state of adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights in the region.
Providing support to National Law Societies in providing legal aid. This is done through giving incentives to increase the number of EALS members engaging in legal aid activities.
Participation in high level public interest advocacy programs by working with the civil societies advancing common good. Links and downloads relating to EACJ, AfCHPR.
